良
liáng · HSK 7
good
👍 良 liáng = good; the bottom of 食 (to eat) minus its lid — the wholesome core of a meal
良 shares its lower body with 食 shi (food/eat); strip the top stroke off food and you are left with the good, nourishing part. It means good or fine, and as an adverb very or very much, as in 良好 lianghao (good, well).
良 — pictograph of a covered grain hopper
良 originated as a pictograph of a funnel-shaped device used to clean or sift grain, with a top opening, central body, and bottom outlet. From this image of selecting good grain, the meaning extended to 'fine,' 'good,' or 'excellent.' The modern shape obscures the original object.
