自理

zì lǐ · HSK 7

to take care of oneself

🧹 自理 = 自 self + 理 manage = manage yourself, take care of your own affairs

自 means self (as in 自己); 理 means to manage or put in order (as in 管理). Together: managing your own affairs, providing for yourself. Often used for daily self-care, like 生活自理 = able to handle daily life independently.

自 — pictograph of a nose
自 originally depicted a human nose, shown frontally with the bridge and nostrils. Ancient Chinese pointed to their own nose to mean 'me,' so 自 shifted to mean 'self' or 'oneself.' A new character 鼻 was later created to carry the original 'nose' meaning.

理 — jade radical 玉/王 + village 里 (phonetic)
理 is a semantic-phonetic compound: the jade radical 王 (玉) on the left signals meaning, while 里 on the right gives the sound. It originally meant the natural veins or grain in a piece of jade, then extended to 'pattern,' 'order,' 'principle,' and finally the modern senses 'reason' and 'to manage.'
