🌿🌍 自然 (nature) + 界 (realm) = the realm of the natural world
自然 means nature, built from 自 (self) + 然 (so, thus): things that are the way they are by themselves. Add 界 (realm, boundary) and you get the whole domain of nature, the natural world as a bounded sphere.
自 — pictograph of a nose
自 originally depicted a human nose, shown frontally with the bridge and nostrils. Ancient Chinese pointed to their own nose to mean 'me,' so 自 shifted to mean 'self' or 'oneself.' A new character 鼻 was later created to carry the original 'nose' meaning.
界 — field 田 + scope 介
界 combines 田 (field) as the semantic component with 介 (jiè) as the phonetic. The original sense referred to boundaries between fields, then broadened to any border, limit, or realm — yielding modern meanings like 'world' (世界) and 'boundary' (边界).
