自卑

zìbēi · HSK 7

feel oneself inferior

自卑 = 自 (self) + 卑 (low/lowly) -> rating yourself as low

卑 means humble or lowly, as in 卑微. Stack it on 自 (self) and you get a self-directed lowness: you rank yourself beneath others. Pronunciation zibei runs the two characters straight together, zi then bei.

自 — pictograph of a nose
自 originally depicted a human nose, shown frontally with the bridge and nostrils. Ancient Chinese pointed to their own nose to mean 'me,' so 自 shifted to mean 'self' or 'oneself.' A new character 鼻 was later created to carry the original 'nose' meaning.
