胡思乱想

to let one's imagination run wild
🌪️ 胡 reckless + 思 think + 乱 chaotic + 想 ponder = thoughts spinning out of control
Two think-verbs (思 and 想) bracketed by two disorder-words (胡 reckless, 乱 chaotic). Doubling the chaos doubles the runaway thinking: a head full of scattered, baseless notions.
乱 — hand 又 + tangled silk 𠬪/乿 component
乱 is the simplified form of 亂. The traditional character depicts hands above and below untangling silk threads on a frame, with 乙 on the right. It originally meant 'to put tangled threads in order,' but came to mean both 'disorder' and 'to govern chaos.'
想 — heart 心 + 相 (xiāng, phonetic)
想 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The heart radical 心 at the bottom carries the meaning, since classical Chinese located thought and feeling in the heart. The top component 相 (xiāng) supplies the sound, and over time the character settled into the senses 'to think,' 'to want,' and 'to miss.'
