胜任

shèng rèn · HSK 7

to be up to a task

💪 胜 win/master + 任 duty = able to master the duty = up to the task, competent

胜 means to win or prevail; 任 is a duty or post. Together: you can prevail at the responsibility, i.e. you're qualified and competent for the job. 任 also appears in 任务 (task).

胜 — flesh 月 (肉) + 生 sheng phonetic
胜 is a semantic-phonetic compound: the 月 (originally 肉 'flesh/meat') element gave it an early meaning related to raw or rank-smelling meat, while 生 supplied the sound. In modern Chinese it was adopted as the simplified form of 勝, meaning 'to win' or 'to surpass', so today it almost always carries that victory sense.

任 — person radical 亻 + 壬 (phonetic)
任 combines the person radical 亻 with 壬, which supplies the sound. The original sense centered on a person bearing a load or burden, which extended naturally to 'carrying responsibility,' 'duty,' and 'to appoint someone to a post.' Modern uses like 任务 (task) and 责任 (responsibility) preserve this core idea.
