肖像

xiào xiàng · HSK 7

portrait

🖼️ 肖 resemble + 像 likeness = a resemblance-image, i.e. a portrait

Both characters mean to resemble or look like someone; doubled up they name the thing that captures a person's likeness: a portrait. Note 像 also appears in 照相 photo and 图像 image.

像 — person radical 亻 + elephant 象
Originally 象 alone meant 'elephant' and by extension 'image/likeness,' since elephants were rare and people knew them mainly through depictions. The 亻 (person) radical was later added to specialize the meaning as 'image, likeness, resemble,' leaving 象 for the animal itself.
