而已

éryǐ · HSK 7

particle: imparting finality (that's all)

🤷 er-yee = and-already, nothing more to add — thats all

而 (er) means 'and/but', 已 (yǐ) means 'already/stop'. Together they signal finality: 'and thats it, nothing further.' Often softens a statement — just this much and no more.

而 — pictograph of beard/whiskers hanging from chin
Originally a pictograph of a beard or facial hair hanging below the chin, visible clearly in oracle bone and bronze script forms. The beard meaning was lost early, and the character was borrowed phonetically to write the grammatical conjunction 'and/but/yet'. This connective use has been standard since classical Chinese.

已 — snake/fetus 巳 variant, with top opened
Originally a pictograph related to 巳 (a coiled fetus or snake form), 已 was distinguished by opening the top stroke. In ancient texts it came to mean 'to stop, cease, finish,' and by extension 'already.' The graphic split from 巳 and 己 helped fix its modern sense as a marker of completed action.
