绝技

jué jì · HSK 7

consummate skill

🤹 绝 (peerless, cut above all) + 技 (skill) = a skill no one else can match

绝 means absolute or unrivalled, the same 绝 as in 绝对 (absolutely); 技 is technique or skill, as in 技术. Together: a feat so far beyond the rest it stands alone — a tour-de-force or showstopping stunt.

绝 — silk 纟 + 巴 (phonetic-ish, knife cutting threads)
绝 originally depicted cutting silk threads with a knife, conveying the idea of severing or cutting off completely. From this concrete sense it extended to mean 'to break off,' 'exhausted,' and figuratively 'absolute' or 'extreme.' The simplified form replaced the older right-hand component with 巴.
