level

🎖️ 级 (level/step) + 别 (category) = a ranked level — military grade

级 means a step or grade in a ladder of ranks; 别 means category or distinction. Together they name the graded slots that sort soldiers by rank. The 钅 (metal) radical in 级 also nods to the metal insignia pinned on to mark each grade.

级 — silk radical 纟 + 及 jí (phonetic)
级 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The silk radical 纟 originally referred to threads or the steps/ranks of silk cords used to mark official grades. The right side 及 (jí) supplies the sound. Over time the meaning shifted from 'cord-marked rank' to general 'level, grade, class.'

别 — separate (knife 刂 + 另 phonetic/'other')
别 originally depicted using a knife (刂) to separate flesh from bone, giving the core sense of 'divide' or 'part from'. The left component 另 ('another, other') reinforces the idea of setting things apart and also hints at the sound. From 'separate' the meaning naturally extended to 'other, different' and to the adverb 'don't' (i.e. do otherwise).
