素养
sù yǎng · HSK 7
attainment in self-cultivation
🌱 素 (plain, basic) + 养 (nurture) = the basic qualities you've nurtured in yourself
素 carries the sense of plain or fundamental, and 养 means to nurture or cultivate. Together 素养 names the attainment a person grows through long self-cultivation. Sound cue: sù yǎng, su then yang.
素 — silk 糸 + sheng 𠂹 (hanging threads)
Originally depicted raw, undyed silk hanging to dry, with the silk radical 糸 below and strands above. From this came the meaning 'plain, unadorned, white,' then extended to 'basic element' or 'plain/simple' in general. The 'vegetarian' sense developed later from the idea of plain, unembellished food.
养 — sheep 羊 (top) + 八 over 艮-like base; simplified from 養 (食 + 羊)
The traditional form 養 combined 食 'food' with 羊 'sheep' as the phonetic, depicting the act of feeding sheep and, by extension, raising or nourishing living things. The simplified form 养 keeps 羊 on top but drops the 食 component. From 'feed' the meaning broadened to rear, support, and cultivate.
