管辖

guǎn xiá · HSK 7

to have jurisdiction

🛂 管 manage + 辖 axle-linchpin = the pin that controls the wheel, so you hold jurisdiction

辖 was the linchpin on a cart axle that keeps the wheel from sliding off, so it came to mean control. Paired with 管 (manage, be in charge), 管辖 means to hold administrative control or jurisdiction over something.

管 — bamboo radical 竹 + official 官 (phonetic)
Originally a pictograph of a bamboo tube or pipe, written with the bamboo radical 竹 on top. The lower component 官 supplies the sound. From 'bamboo pipe' it extended to 'tube,' then to 'manage' or 'control' — since pipes channel and regulate flow, the meaning shifted toward administration.
