离谱 literally means to leave (离) the musical score (谱) — playing notes that aren't written. So it describes something wildly off-base, ridiculous, or unreasonable. The 儿 suffix is a casual northern-Mandarin tag.
离 — top 亠 + 凶 + 禸 (animal track)
Originally depicted a long-tailed bird caught in a net, from which the early sense 'oriole' arose. The character was later borrowed phonetically for the unrelated verb meaning 'to leave' or 'be apart from,' which became its dominant modern usage. The original bird sense faded out of everyday use.
谱 — speech radical 言 + 普 (pǔ, universal)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The speech radical 言 signals the meaning domain — words, records, or systematic listings — while 普 supplies the sound pǔ. Originally referring to a register or chronicle, it came to mean a manual, table, or musical score that lays things out systematically.
