离奇

lí qí · HSK 7

odd

🛸 离 depart + 奇 strange: something that departs from the normal into the strange = bizarre

奇 already means odd or strange (as in 奇怪). Pair it with 离, to leave or depart, and you get an event that has left normalcy behind. Note the sound: lí qí, two rising second tones in a row.

离 — top 亠 + 凶 + 禸 (animal track)
Originally depicted a long-tailed bird caught in a net, from which the early sense 'oriole' arose. The character was later borrowed phonetically for the unrelated verb meaning 'to leave' or 'be apart from,' which became its dominant modern usage. The original bird sense faded out of everyday use.
