看管

kān guǎn · HSK 6

to look after

👀🔑 kan (watch) + guan (manage) = watch-manage, to look after

The first character 看 means to watch or look, while 管 means to manage or be in charge of. Together they combine into supervised care — keeping an eye on something while being responsible for it.

看 — hand 手 over eye 目
看 is an associative compound showing a hand (手, simplified to 龹) shading an eye (目), depicting someone shielding their eyes to look into the distance. From this concrete gesture it broadened to mean 'to look,' 'to watch,' and later 'to read' or 'to consider.'

管 — bamboo radical 竹 + official 官 (phonetic)
Originally a pictograph of a bamboo tube or pipe, written with the bamboo radical 竹 on top. The lower component 官 supplies the sound. From 'bamboo pipe' it extended to 'tube,' then to 'manage' or 'control' — since pipes channel and regulate flow, the meaning shifted toward administration.
