看出

kànchū · HSK 5

to make out; to see

👁️ 看 (look) + 出 (out) = look and figure out

看 means to look or watch; 出 means out or emerge. Together: looking until something emerges — you perceive it, tell it apart, or spot it. The 出 adds the sense of detection coming out of observation.

看 — hand 手 over eye 目
看 is an associative compound showing a hand (手, simplified to 龹) shading an eye (目), depicting someone shielding their eyes to look into the distance. From this concrete gesture it broadened to mean 'to look,' 'to watch,' and later 'to read' or 'to consider.'

出 — foot 止 emerging from enclosure 凵
出 is a pictograph showing a foot or plant stepping out of a hollow or enclosure, depicting the act of going forth. The original sense of 'coming out' or 'emerging' has remained stable since oracle bone script. It now broadly means 'to exit, go out, or produce.'
