的话

if

的话 = 's/of (的) + speech (话); 'the words of...' → conditional 'if'

的 marks possession/modification; 话 means speech or words. Tacked onto a clause, 的话 literally frames it as 'the case of saying X', which Mandarin uses as a soft 'if X'. Often paired with 如果 at the front.

的 — white 白 + ladle 勺
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 白 ('white') gave the meaning of bright or clear, and 勺 supplied the sound. It once meant 'bright' or 'target' (still seen in 目的, 'aim'). In modern Chinese it was borrowed as a grammatical particle marking possession or modification.

话 — speech radical 讠 (言) + tongue 舌
话 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 讠 (simplified from 言, 'speech') gives the meaning, signaling something said, while 舌 ('tongue') hints at the sound and reinforces the speaking sense. The traditional form 話 makes the 言 element explicit; today 话 means 'speech, talk, words.'
