🎨 画 (paint) + 家 (specialist) = paint-specialist = painter
家 acts as a suffix for experts (科学家 scientist, 作家 writer), so 画家 literally reads as paint-expert. Same 家 that means home/family, repurposed for one who masters a craft.
画 — hand 一 + field 田 + frame 凵
Originally a pictograph of a hand holding a brush drawing boundaries around a field, depicting the act of marking out land. The top once showed a brush (聿), and 田 represents the field being divided. Over time it came to mean 'to draw, paint' and also 'a stroke' in characters.
家 — roof 宀 + pig 豕
Originally a pictograph of a pig under a roof, since domesticated pigs were kept in or under the home in ancient China. Over time the meaning broadened from 'household' to 'family,' and by extension 'home' or a specialist (as in 专家, 'expert').
