top scorer in college entrance examination 高考[gao1 kao3]

🏆📜 状元 = condition/status (状) + first/chief (元) = the number-one ranked scholar

In imperial China, 状元 was the top scorer in the highest palace exam. 元 means first or primary, so the term marks the single highest-ranked candidate. Today it also tags the top scorer in the 高考 college entrance exam, or figuratively the best in any field.

元 — 二 (two) + 兒 variant 儿 (legs/person)
元 originally depicted a person with the head emphasized on top, meaning 'head' or 'origin'. From this came the extended senses of 'first', 'beginning', and 'primary'. It was later borrowed as the name of the Yuan dynasty and the modern Chinese currency unit.
