fragment
🧩 片 (slice/piece) + 段 (section/segment) = a piece-section, i.e. a fragment
片 means a thin slice or sheet; 段 means a length or section of something. Stuck together they name a part broken off a larger whole, like a snippet of text, film, or memory.
片 — right half of 木 (tree split vertically)
Pictograph showing the right half of a tree 木 split down the middle, depicting a thin slice or slab of wood. From this came the meanings 'slice,' 'flat thin piece,' and by extension 'sheet' or 'card.' Its mirror image 爿 represents the left half.
段 — left component 𠂉 + right component 殳 (weapon/strike)
段 originally depicted striking or hammering a piece of stone or metal with a tool, shown by the 殳 'strike' element on the right. From this 'hammering/forging' sense it extended to mean a section or segment cut off, and today it commonly means a paragraph, stage, or piece.
