灵机一动

líng jī yī dòng · HSK 7

a bright idea suddenly occurs

💡⚙️ 灵机 quick-wit gears + 一动 one move: the mental mechanism clicks once

灵 means quick or clever, 机 is a mechanism or gear, and 一动 is one movement. The clever gear turns a single time, the moment a brainwave fires. líng jī rhymes loosely with English lingy-gee, the gear that goes ding.

灵 — rain 雨 + mouths 口口口 + shaman 巫
Originally written 靈, depicting shamans (巫) using mouths (口口口) to chant prayers for rain (雨). The character meant a spirit medium who could summon rain, then broadened to mean spirit, soul, or supernatural efficacy. The simplified form 灵 replaces the lower portion with 火 (fire) over 彐.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'

动 — force 力 + heavy/重 (simplified from 動)
The traditional form 動 combines 重 (heavy) as the phonetic with 力 (force/strength) as the semantic, suggesting the effort needed to move something heavy. The simplified form 动 replaces 重 with 云, keeping 力 to convey action and motion.
