🌊⛵ 水 water + 涨 rise + 船 boat + 高 high: when water rises, the boat rises with it
Literally water rises, boat lifts. When the base level goes up, everything resting on it goes up too — so individual things climb along with the general trend.
水 — pictograph of flowing water
水 is a pictograph depicting a stream of flowing water, with the central line representing the main current and the side strokes showing splashing droplets or ripples. In oracle bone script it was drawn even more clearly as a wavy vertical line with branches. It retains its original meaning of 'water' and also serves as a radical, often appearing in the compressed form 氵.
涨 — water 氵 + 张 (zhāng, phonetic)
涨 combines the water radical 氵 with 张 (to stretch, expand), which also gives the sound. Originally it described water swelling or rising, like a flooding river. The meaning later extended to prices or quantities going up.
船 — boat radical 舟 + 㕣 (phonetic)
船 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 舟 depicts a boat and gives the meaning, while the right side 㕣 originally suggested the sound. Together they refer to a ship or vessel, a meaning that has stayed stable since early seal script.
高 — pictograph of a tall building/tower
高 is a pictograph of a tall structure, likely a watchtower or multi-story gate, with a roof on top, an upper chamber, and a base below. From this concrete image of height it extended to the general meanings 'tall,' 'high,' and figuratively 'lofty' or 'noble.'
