气派
qì pài · HSK 7
imposing manner or style
🦚 气 (air, spirit) + 派 (style, manner) = a commanding air of style
气 means air or spirit and 派 means style or manner, so together they describe the grand, commanding air someone projects. Sounds like chee-pie: a big show of style, not a small slice.
气 — steam/vapor radical 气
Originally a pictograph of rising vapor or clouds drifting in the sky, depicting curling streams of air. The character came to mean breath, air, and by extension vital energy or 'qi.' The simplified form 气 keeps the original outline; the traditional 氣 added 米 (rice) to suggest steam rising from cooking grain.
派 — water radical 氵 + 𠂢 (branching stream)
派 originally depicted branching tributaries of a river, with 氵 (water) added to reinforce the meaning. The right side 𠂢 shows a stream splitting into smaller channels. From 'river branch' it extended to mean a faction, school, or to dispatch/send out.
