ridgepole
🏠 dong sounds like DONG — a bell rings at the ridgepole of a building
The ridgepole is the highest beam holding a roof together. In Chinese, 栋 also counts buildings: 一栋楼 = one building. Wood radical 木 on the left shows its timber origin.
栋 — wood radical 木 + east 东 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The wood radical 木 indicates the meaning (a wooden architectural element), while 东 (dōng) supplies the sound. Originally referred to the main ridgepole or central beam of a building, later extended to mean a pillar or, by metaphor, a leading figure who supports an enterprise.
