even more

⬆️ 更 = even more + 是 = is; literally 'is even more so'

更 (gēng/gèng) means 'more' or 'further'; 是 (shì) is the copula 'to be'. Together 更是 stacks them to mean 'is all the more' or 'even more so' — used to intensify a follow-up statement.

更 — 丙 (bǐng) phonetic + 攴/攵 (action/strike)
Originally an oracle-bone graph showing a hand striking a watch-drum to mark night watches, hence 'to change shifts.' From this came the meanings 'to change' and 'to replace' (gēng). The reading gèng later developed the sense 'further, even more,' as in 'one watch further on.'

是 — sun 日 + 正 (correct/upright)
Originally a compound suggesting 'the sun 日 directly overhead'—straight, correct, true. From this concrete sense of 'right' or 'this very thing,' 是 came to mean 'this' as a demonstrative, and later the modern copula 'to be / is.' The 'correct' meaning survives in words like 是非 (right and wrong).
