晋升

jìn shēng · HSK 7

to promote to a higher position

📈⬆️ 晋 = advance + 升 = rise; advance and rise together = move up the ranks

晋 carries the sense of advancing or moving forward, and 升 means to ascend or go up. Stack them and you get a clean compound for rising into a higher position: a promotion. The 升 part also shows up in 升级 (level up).

升 — ladle/scoop pictograph (related to 斗)
升 originally pictured a ladle or dipper used to measure grain, closely related to 斗 (a larger dipper). It came to denote a unit of dry measure (a 'sheng', about a liter). From 'scooping up' it extended to the meaning 'rise, ascend'.
