时段
shíduàn · HSK 7
period of time
🕐 时段 = 时 (time) + 段 (segment) = a segment of time
时 means time or hour; 段 means a section or segment (same 段 as in 段落 paragraph). Put together, 时段 is one carved-out segment of the day — a time slot or period.
时 — sun 日 + temple/measure 寺
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 日 (sun) gives the meaning of time or season, while 寺 (shí) supplies the sound. Early forms used 之 as the phonetic before 寺 replaced it. The core sense 'season, time, hour' has stayed stable since ancient Chinese.
段 — left component 𠂉 + right component 殳 (weapon/strike)
段 originally depicted striking or hammering a piece of stone or metal with a tool, shown by the 殳 'strike' element on the right. From this 'hammering/forging' sense it extended to mean a section or segment cut off, and today it commonly means a paragraph, stage, or piece.
