日语

Rì yǔ · HSK 6

Japanese language

🇯🇵 日 (sun/day) + 语 (language) = the language of the land of the rising sun

Japan is literally 日本 (sun origin), so 日语 means the language from where the sun originates. The 语 suffix works like -ese in Japanese.

日 — pictograph of the sun
日 is a pictograph of the sun, originally drawn as a circle with a dot or stroke inside representing the sun's substance. Over time the round shape was squared off into the modern rectangular form. It means 'sun' and by extension 'day'.
