🏺 文物 = 文 culture/writing + 物 thing/object = a cultural object, a relic
文 carries the sense of culture, writing, civilization; 物 means thing or object. Together they label objects that civilization left behind: artifacts and historical relics. Same 物 as in 动物 (animal) and 礼物 (gift).
文 — pictograph of crossed lines on a chest
文 originally depicted a person with patterns or tattoos drawn on the chest, shown as crossed or interwoven lines. From this image of decorative markings, it came to mean 'pattern,' then 'writing,' 'script,' and 'literature' or 'culture.' The modern senses all trace back to the idea of meaningful marks.
