攀升
pān shēng · HSK 7
to rise
📈 攀 clamber + 升 rise = clamber-and-rise; literal climbing or prices going up
攀 is to clamber or scale (hands gripping, as on a cliff); 升 is to ascend or rise. Together they mean climbing upward, and by extension prices or numbers rising steeply.
升 — ladle/scoop pictograph (related to 斗)
升 originally pictured a ladle or dipper used to measure grain, closely related to 斗 (a larger dipper). It came to denote a unit of dry measure (a 'sheng', about a liter). From 'scooping up' it extended to the meaning 'rise, ascend'.
