🚪 推 push + 敲 knock = the poet who agonized over choosing push or knock for one line
From a Tang story: poet Jia Dao kept switching between 推 (push) and 敲 (knock) for a verse about a monk at a gate. The endless back-and-forth gave 推敲 its sense of weighing words and thinking something over carefully.
推 — hand radical 扌 + 隹 (short-tailed bird)
A semantic-phonetic compound: the hand radical 扌 gives the meaning 'to push' or act with the hand, while 隹 supplies the sound (originally close to 'tui'). The core sense has stayed remarkably stable, expanding from physical pushing to figurative uses like 'recommend' or 'infer'.
敲 — 高 (tall) phonetic + 攴/攵 (strike) semantic
敲 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The right side 攴 (also written 攵) shows a hand holding a stick, giving the meaning 'to strike' or 'to knock.' The left side 高 'tall' supplies the sound. Together they depict the action of knocking or rapping on something.
