to report

📰 报 (report) + 道 (way/channel) = report via a channel = news coverage

报 means to report or announce; 道 means way, road, or channel. Together: reporting through a channel, i.e. news coverage. Compare 报纸 (newspaper) and 频道 (TV channel) — same 报 and same channel sense of 道.

报 — hand 扌 (报) + 卩 seal/kneeling figure
Originally 報 depicted a hand pressing a kneeling criminal under a manacle (幸 + 卩 + 又), meaning 'to judge' or 'requite a crime.' From 'repay/requite' it broadened to 'respond, report, announce.' The simplified form 报 keeps the hand 扌 and 卩 but drops the manacle element.

道 — 辶 (walk) + 首 (head)
Originally a compound of 辶 'walk/movement' and 首 'head', depicting a path one walks while looking ahead. The literal sense 'road, way' extended metaphorically to 'method, doctrine, the Way (Dao)'. This philosophical meaning became central in Daoist and Confucian thought.
