总是

always

♾️ 总 = always/overall + 是 = is; literally overall-is = always is

总 carries the sense of overall/general/sum, and 是 means is/yes. Together 总是 reads as overall-is, i.e. invariably the case — always. Common pattern: 他总是迟到 = he is always late.

总 — top 丷 + 口 + 心 (heart radical)
总 is the simplified form of 總. The traditional form combined 糸 (silk threads) with 悤 as phonetic, originally meaning to gather or tie threads together. From 'bundling threads' the meaning extended to 'gather all,' 'general,' 'overall,' and 'always.'

是 — sun 日 + 正 (correct/upright)
Originally a compound suggesting 'the sun 日 directly overhead'—straight, correct, true. From this concrete sense of 'right' or 'this very thing,' 是 came to mean 'this' as a demonstrative, and later the modern copula 'to be / is.' The 'correct' meaning survives in words like 是非 (right and wrong).
