待会儿

dāihuìr · HSK 6

in a moment

⏳ 待 (wait) + 会儿 (a moment) = wait a little while

待 means wait/stay; 会儿 is a short while. Together literally wait-a-moment, so in a moment or later. The 儿 suffix is typical Beijing speech; Taiwan reads it dài huǐ.

待 — chì 彳 (step) + 寺 sì (temple/phonetic)
待 combines the 'step' radical 彳, suggesting movement or a path, with 寺, which serves as the phonetic component. Originally it conveyed the idea of stopping along a road, which extended to 'waiting.' Over time it also took on related meanings like 'to treat' or 'to deal with' someone.

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
