强行

qiángxíng · HSK 7

force

💪 强 strong + 行 to act = to act by sheer strength, i.e. force something through

强 means strong or to compel; 行 means to do or carry out. Together they describe doing an action forcibly, pushing it through against resistance. The qiáng in 强行 is the same strong as in 强大 (powerful).

强 — bow 弓 + elong 㔾 + insect 虫
Originally written 強, depicting a type of strong-shelled insect or weevil, with 虫 (insect) as semantic and 弘 as phonetic. The meaning shifted from the insect's tough shell to the general sense of 'strong, powerful, forceful.' The form 强 is a common variant where 弘 is replaced by 弓+口.

行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
