山坡

hillside

⛰️ 山 mountain + 坡 slope = the side of a hill

坡 pairs the 土 earth radical with 皮 skin — a slope is where the earths surface stretches and tilts. The same 坡 appears in 新加坡 Singapore as a phonetic loan.

山 — pictograph of three mountain peaks
山 is one of the oldest pictographs in Chinese, originally drawn in oracle bone script as three pointed peaks rising from a baseline. The form was simplified over time into the modern three vertical strokes on a base. Its meaning has stayed remarkably stable: 'mountain' or 'hill'.

坡 — earth radical 土 + skin 皮 (phonetic)
坡 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The earth radical 土 gives the meaning, indicating land or terrain, while 皮 (pí) supplies the sound, shifted to pō. It originally referred to a sloping piece of ground, and still means slope, hillside, or incline today.
