就要

jiù yào · HSK 2

to be going to

⏳ 就 = right away + 要 = want; together = about to / going to

就 marks immediacy (right then), 要 marks intention or future need. Stacked, 就要 means an event is imminent: 'about to happen' or 'will soon'. Often paired with 了 at sentence end: 火车就要来了 = the train is about to arrive.

就 — 京 (capital) + 尤 (especially)
Originally a compound suggesting going to a high place (京 depicts a tall building) to settle or accomplish something. Over time the meaning shifted from 'approach a high place' to 'go to,' then broadened to 'accomplish,' and finally to the modern grammatical senses 'then,' 'just,' or 'precisely.'

要 — west 覀 (top) + woman 女 (bottom)
Originally a pictograph of a woman with hands on her waist, meaning 'waist' (the original form of 腰). The top 覀 is a stylized depiction of the waist area, not the character for 'west'. Over time it was borrowed for the meaning 'to want, important', so 腰 (with 月 flesh radical) was created for the original 'waist' sense.
