front cover

📕 封 = seal/close + 面 = face/surface → the sealed surface = cover

封 means to seal or close (think envelope sealing); 面 means face or surface. Together they describe the sealed outer surface of a book — its front cover or binding.

封 — earth 土 doubled (圭) + inch 寸 (hand)
Originally a pictograph of a hand planting a sapling on a mound of earth, marking a boundary. From this came the meaning of granting fiefs to nobles, then sealing or closing off territory. The modern senses 'to seal' and 'envelope' both stem from this idea of enclosing.

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
