封闭

resistant to anything new
🔒 封 = seal/close + 闭 = shut; sealed-shut to new ideas
封 means to seal or close off (think envelopes: 信封). 闭 means to shut or close. Together 封闭 = sealed shut — closed off, isolated, or resistant to outside influence and new ideas.
封 — earth 土 doubled (圭) + inch 寸 (hand)
Originally a pictograph of a hand planting a sapling on a mound of earth, marking a boundary. From this came the meaning of granting fiefs to nobles, then sealing or closing off territory. The modern senses 'to seal' and 'envelope' both stem from this idea of enclosing.
闭 — door 門 + talent 才
Originally written 閉, showing a door 門 with a bar or bolt inside (the 才 component depicts the latch, not the modern meaning 'talent'). The character pictures a door barred shut, giving the meaning 'to close' or 'shut'. The simplified form 闭 keeps the same structure with the reduced door radical 门.
