dialogue
💬 对 = facing/toward + 话 = speech: speech facing each other = dialogue
对 means 'to face' or 'paired/matching'; 话 means 'speech' or 'words'. Together they form 'face-to-face speech' — a dialogue. Compare 谈话 (conversation) which uses 谈 (chat) instead of 对.
对 — 又 (hand) + 寸 (measure/rule)
Originally depicted a hand (又) holding or responding to something, with 寸 added as a phonetic-semantic element suggesting measured action. The traditional form 對 showed a hand presenting an object in reply, giving the core sense of 'to answer' or 'face toward.' Modern meanings like 'correct' and 'pair' grew from this idea of matching response.
话 — speech radical 讠 (言) + tongue 舌
话 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 讠 (simplified from 言, 'speech') gives the meaning, signaling something said, while 舌 ('tongue') hints at the sound and reinforces the speaking sense. The traditional form 話 makes the 言 element explicit; today 话 means 'speech, talk, words.'
