family

🏠 家庭 = 家 (home) + 庭 (courtyard/yard)

家 shows 豕 (pig) under 宀 (roof) — the classic Chinese household. 庭 adds the courtyard radical 广 with 廷 (court). Together: the home plus its yard, i.e. the family unit and its domestic space.

家 — roof 宀 + pig 豕
Originally a pictograph of a pig under a roof, since domesticated pigs were kept in or under the home in ancient China. Over time the meaning broadened from 'household' to 'family,' and by extension 'home' or a specialist (as in 专家, 'expert').
