really
✅ 实 = solid/real + 在 = exist/be-at → really exists, i.e. truly
实 means solid or true; 在 means to exist or be present. Together they mean something genuinely is the case — indeed, really, in fact. Often used to soften a confession: 我实在不知道 = I honestly don't know.
在 — earth 土 + phonetic 才
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 土 (earth) gives the meaning of a place or location, while 才 supplies the sound. It came to mean 'to be present/located at,' and now also serves as a grammatical marker for ongoing actions, like 'in the middle of doing.'
