定做

to have something made to order
🪡📐 定 (fixed/set) + 做 (make) = make something to a fixed specification
You set the specs first, then someone makes it. A tailor takes your exact measurements (fixed numbers) and produces (makes) a garment that fits only you. Custom-made = fixed + make.
定 — roof 宀 + 正 (correct/upright, phonetic)
Originally written with 宀 (roof) over 正 (upright/correct), suggesting a household settled and orderly under its roof. Over time 正 simplified to 㐬-like form at the bottom, and the meaning shifted from 'settled home' to the broader senses of 'fix, stable, decide.'
做 — person 亻 + make 故
做 is a later vernacular variant of 作 (to make/do), formed with the person radical 亻 for human action and 故 as a phonetic component. It emerged in medieval Chinese to handle everyday senses like 'do, make, act as,' while 作 kept more literary uses. Today both share meanings but 做 dominates colloquial speech.
