🎖️🪖 官 official + 兵 soldier = the officers and the rank-and-file together
官 means official or officer; 兵 means soldier or troops. Stacked, 官兵 covers both ranks at once: the commanding officers plus the ordinary men, i.e. government troops as a whole.
官 — roof 宀 + mound/many 㠯
Originally a pictograph showing a building (roof 宀) over stacked mounds or seats (㠯), depicting an official residence or government office. The meaning extended from the building itself to the officials who worked there, and then broadly to 'official' or 'government.'
兵 — axe 斤 + two hands 廾
Originally a pictograph of two hands gripping an axe or weapon, depicting a soldier wielding arms. The ancient form clearly showed 斤 (axe) held by 廾 (two hands). The meaning naturally extended from 'weapon' to 'soldier,' 'troops,' and 'military.'
