学子 — student

🎓📚 学子 = study (学) + child/person (子) = a study-person, i.e. a student

学 means to study or learn; 子 is a noun suffix marking a person. Together they label someone whose role is studying — a student or disciple. Compare 学生, which uses 生 (life/pupil) instead of 子.

学 — hands 𦥑 + roof 冖 + child 子
Originally 學, depicting two hands manipulating something (often interpreted as counting rods or the 爻 trigram symbols) under a roof, with a child 子 below — a child learning under instruction. The simplified form 学 replaces the top with a stylized 龸. Core meaning has always been 'to study, learn'.

子 — pictograph of a baby/child with arms out
子 began as a pictograph of a swaddled infant with a large head and outstretched arms, originally meaning 'baby' or 'child.' From there it broadened to 'son,' 'offspring,' and a respectful suffix for masters like 孔子 (Confucius). It also became one of the twelve earthly branches.
