天地

tiān dì · HSK 7

heaven and earth

☀️🌍 天 (sky/heaven) + 地 (earth/ground) = heaven and earth

A compound of 天 tiān (sky, heaven) and 地 dì (earth, ground). Together the two stacked halves of the world name everything between them: the whole world, or by extension a scope or field of activity.

天 — 一 (one/sky) above 大 (big person)
Originally a pictograph of a person (大) with an emphasized head, representing what is above — the sky or heavens. The top stroke evolved into 一, symbolizing the vast expanse overhead. From 'sky' it extended to mean 'day,' 'heaven,' and 'nature.'

地 — earth 土 + 也 (phonetic)
地 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left component 土 means 'earth' or 'soil' and gives the meaning, while 也 on the right hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the ground or land, it broadened to mean 'place,' 'region,' and 'territory.'
