处置

chǔzhì · HSK 7

to handle; to take care of

⚖️ CHOOse what to do — chǔzhì means deal with or punish

CHOO-zhì sounds like 'choose.' When you deal with a problem or punish someone, you choose a course of action. The 处 means 'place/handle' and 置 means 'put/set' — putting things in their place.

处 — 夂 (foot) + 几 (low table/stool)
Originally depicted a person stopping (夂, an inverted foot) beside a stool (几), suggesting someone settling down in a place. From 'to dwell/stay' the meaning broadened to 'place, location' (chù) and 'to handle, deal with' (chǔ). The simplified form drops the older 虍 top found in 處.

置 — net 罒 (top) + straight 直 (bottom)
Originally a phono-semantic compound: the net 网/罒 on top suggested the idea of catching or pardoning a criminal, while 直 ('straight, upright') gave the sound and hinted at setting things upright. The meaning shifted from 'pardon, set free' to the modern senses 'place, put, set up, establish'.
