📍 处 = place/situation + 在 = located at; literally 'situated at'
处 means a place or situation; 在 marks location or state of being. Together 处在 = 'to be situated in' a condition or circumstance. Compare 在 alone ('to be at') — 处在 adds the nuance of being in a particular state.
处 — 夂 (foot) + 几 (low table/stool)
Originally depicted a person stopping (夂, an inverted foot) beside a stool (几), suggesting someone settling down in a place. From 'to dwell/stay' the meaning broadened to 'place, location' (chù) and 'to handle, deal with' (chǔ). The simplified form drops the older 虍 top found in 處.
在 — earth 土 + phonetic 才
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 土 (earth) gives the meaning of a place or location, while 才 supplies the sound. It came to mean 'to be present/located at,' and now also serves as a grammatical marker for ongoing actions, like 'in the middle of doing.'
