坏事

villainy

👎 坏 = bad + 事 = matter/affair, so a bad affair: wrongdoing

坏 means bad or broken, 事 means matter or affair. Stack them and you get a bad deed, evildoing, or villainy. The same 事 shows up in 故事 (story) and 事情 (matter).

坏 — earth 土 + 不 (not)
A modern simplified form. The left side 土 (earth) suggests something physical or material, while the right side 不 (not/negative) acts as a semantic hint meaning 'not good.' The traditional form 壞 used 褱 as a phonetic component, but the simplified 坏 reuses an older variant character.

事 — hand 又 holding a banner/tablet on a pole
Originally a pictograph of a hand (又) grasping a pole or ceremonial banner used by an official, depicting the act of conducting court business. From this it came to mean 'affair, matter, business, service.' It shares an ancient origin with 史 (scribe) and 吏 (official).
