🗺️ 国土 = 国 country + 土 earth/soil = a nation's land, its territory
国 means country/state and 土 means earth, soil, or ground. Together they name the land a country holds — its territory or domain. Same 土 as in 土地 (land) and 本土 (mainland).
国 — enclosure 囗 + jade 玉
国 is a simplified form of 國. The outer 囗 represents borders or an enclosed territory, while the inner 玉 (jade) suggests a treasured realm ruled by a sovereign. The traditional 國 used 或 inside, depicting a guarded region with a weapon, later simplified by replacing it with 玉.
土 — pictograph of a mound of earth on the ground
土 is a pictograph showing a lump or mound of soil resting on the ground line. In oracle bone script it depicted an earthen heap, sometimes interpreted as an altar to the earth god. The meaning has remained stable: earth, soil, or ground.
